Revalidation

Latest Updates

Supporting Information for Revalidation

To prepare for revalidation, all Medical Royal Colleges and Faculties have been working with the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges (AoMRC) and General Medical Council (GMC) to provide generic guidance on the supporting information required by all doctors for appraisal and revalidation. Where appropriate, each College and Faculty has also recommended guidance specific to their specialty. We have done this for Occupational Medicine.

Over the last year, in particular, much work has been carried out by the AoMRC and the GMC to streamline and simplify the guidance, in comparison to previous versions. The latest version of the generic guidance and our specialty specific additions can be viewed via the previous link. It is currently in its consultation phase and we would welcome your comments on both the generic and specialty specific aspects of the guidance.

Please submit your comments to rachel.briggs@facoccmed.ac.uk by Tuesday 20th September 2011.

CPD – Retrospective Submissions

In response to recent requests from several members to submit CPD returns for multiple years, the Executive Committee has reconsidered its position to restrict CPD submissions to one, for the previous calendar year. The Faculty will now process submissions for previous years; the fee for each year’s late submission is £60. Members are advised that such submissions will be subject to audit. All CPD returns should be sent to cpd@facoccmed.ac.uk.

GMC issues guidance on colleague and patient questionnaires for revalidation

The GMC has recently produced a series of checklists for those who will be involved in commissioning, developing and administering colleague and patient questionnaires.

Their new guidance can be downloaded from the GMC website at http://www.gmc-uk.org/doctors/revalidation/9575.asp. While the GMC will not be accrediting any questionnaires for the purposes of revalidation, they will expect all questionnaires to meet the criteria they have published.

Feedback from colleagues and feedback from patients (where appropriate) will be two pieces of supporting information that doctors will need to collect at least once in a revalidation cycle, preferably in the first two years. Feedback is designed to be a learning and development tool to help doctors identify their strengths and areas where they may be able to improve their practice.

Who is the Responsible Officer’s Responsible Officer? April 2011

Responsible Officers themselves of course need their own RO, and the regulations state that this will be the RO of the relevant Strategic Health Authority (SHA). The SHA leads are currently in the process of identifying ROs in their area and asking them to complete the self-assessment questionnaire, which is aimed at establishing the baseline position in preparation for revalidation. The questionnaire can be downloaded from the NHS Revalidation Support Team website at http://www.revalidationsupport.nhs.uk/or_1.asp. Any designated body, as defined by the RO regulations, that has not yet made contact with their SHA RO, should do so at the earliest opportunity in order to be included in any programme of training that might be offered. A list of contacts can be found at: http://www.revalidationsupport.nhs.uk/or_2.asp.

Designated bodies that do not wish to appoint their own RO may arrange to contract with an alternative designated body which can be a similar organisation or the Faculty of Occupational Medicine.

Who will be your Responsible Officer? – February, 2011

  • The Medical Profession (Responsible Officers) Regulations were laid before parliament last year and came into force on 1 January 2011. The Responsible Officer (RO) will play a crucial role in the medical revalidation process. Every doctor will need to connect to a RO who will make a statement of positive assurance to the General Medical Council about their fitness to practice.
  • Many doctors will connect to the RO in the organisation where they are employed. NHS Trusts, the Armed Forces and deaneries are specifically identified as ‘designated bodies’ in Part 1 of the Regulations. Part 2 lists a variety of other organisations that employ doctors which are also designated, including ‘any organisation involved in the treatment of disease, disorder or injury by or under the supervision of a medical practitioner’, ‘any organisation which carries out diagnostic and screening procedures…..’ and government departments or executive agencies.
  • However some doctors and this includes many occupational physicians will not be able to access an RO within their organisation. In such cases, the Faculty will be able to help by providing an RO service to occupational physicians who work independently or in smaller or ‘non-designated’ organisations.
  • It is suggested that organisations that employ doctors should carefully examine the regulations and associated guidance and start to plan accordingly. A summary is available, with further details and links to the Responsible Officer Regulations.

Revalidation Handbook – February 2011

Revalidation draws ever closer and the Faculty of Occupational Medicine continues to be involved in several streams of work, to help occupational physicians through the process. Now that there is sufficient clarity about how revalidation will be applied, the Faculty has produced a revalidation handbook. The intention is to have a single Faculty document that is the source of all information required for individuals to revalidate. It is a 'living document' that will be responsive to feedback from individual occupational physicians, the piloting of revalidation and its eventual introduction.

We welcome feedback and any comments should be sent to: professionaldevelopment@facoccmed.ac.uk
