Candidates in specialist training:
Trainees in an approved higher specialist training post or programme who have not passed the AFOM before September 2010, or have only passed certain elements of it, will be required to take the Part 2 MFOM examination instead from September 2010 (Membership regulation M50). This will involve a change in assessment methods but not a change in syllabus.
Candidates not in specialist training:
Candidates outwith specialist training are reminded that there will be no opportunity to retake the AFOM examination after the January 2010 sitting. The AFOM has been withdrawn as a stand-alone qualification.
Under the revised Regulations for the award of membership it will be possible for non-specialists to submit for Membership. To do so they will normally need to pass the three central elements of examination (Part 1 and Part 2 MFOM, dissertation) and demonstrate equivalent competencies to those of UK specialists (for further details please see the regulations using the link above).
Changes to Part 2 MFOM examination
Following the first sitting of the Part 2 MFOM examination in September 2010, the Faculty Board has agreed a number of amendments to the MFOM Regulations and arrangements for the Part 2 MFOM examination. The aim of the changes is to allow greater flexibility to trainees with regard to their eligibility to take the Part 2 MFOM examination whilst ensuring the examinations are run as economically as possible.
In summary, the following amendments have been made:
- In future the Part 2 MFOM examination will run on a eight-monthly cycle. In 2011, the written examination will take place on the 13th June and the clinical examination (OSPE) on the 29th June. In 2012, there will be 2 diets, one in February and the second in October.
- Trainees will have the opportunity to sit the examination 6 months after the date on which a positive outcome for the ARCP review for ST4 was awarded.
- The regulatory requirement to submit a dissertation before sitting the Part 2 MFOM examination has been removed.
Further details on the changes to the Part 2 MFOM examination can be found in the Regulations for the Award of Membership. The main changes are to Regulations M37, M38, Guidance on M38 and ‘Guidance to ARCPs and supervisors on the submission timetable’.
