Important notice for StRs, planning to sit the September/October Part 2 MFOM examination:

  • The eligibility requirements for exam entry require evidence from the ARCP that you have met the end competencies of ST5. We realise that some ARCPs meet in September, which may pose a difficulty to candidates in furnishing the requisite evidence by the closing date of application. For this examination, we will allow you to apply to enter the examination without your ARCP form for ST5; it must however reach us no later than one week before you sit the written part of the examination.
  • StRs are also reminded that their research dissertation or equivalent evidence must be submitted to the Faculty, before applying to sit the Part 2 MFOM examination.

Candidates in specialist training:

As outlined in April 2008 (Question and Answer sheet 3: Changes to Faculty Examinations), trainees in an approved higher specialist training post or programme who have not passed the AFOM before September 2010, or have only passed certain elements of it, will be required to take the Part 2 MFOM examination instead from September 2010 (Membership regulation M50). This will involve a change in assessment methods but not a change in syllabus.

Candidates not in specialist training:

Candidates outwith specialist training are reminded that there will be no opportunity to retake the AFOM examination after the January 2010 sitting. As announced in April 2008, the AFOM has been withdrawn as a stand-alone qualification.

Under the revised Regulations for the award of membership it will be possible for non-specialists to submit for Membership. To do so they will normally need to pass the three central elements of examination (Part 1 and Part 2 MFOM, dissertation) and demonstrate equivalent competencies to those of UK specialists (for further details please see the regulations using the link above).
