Faculty AGM, ASM and dinner 2012This is the main annual event in the Faculty of Occupational Medicine’s calendar. It is an opportunity to hear a range of interesting and eminent speakers, to meet colleagues old and new and to be updated on a variety of topics in occupational medicine.As well as presentations on original work by Faculty trainees who have written some of the best dissertations of the year, speakers will include: ~ Professor Sir Anthony Newman Taylor and Professor David Coggon on the legacy of Sir Richard Doll to celebrate the 21st year of BOHRF and ~ Dr Rob Thornton, on what occupational physicians need to know about revalidation, which will be going live in 2012-2013. Autumn conference 2012 – - Should they stay or should they go? The duties of employers and health professionals for workers abroadJoint conference of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine and Faculty of Travel MedicineWe are delighted that these two faculties are pooling their expertise to put together an exciting programme which will be of interest to employers and health professionals involved with people who travel overseas to work. The conference will explore some of the complex responsibilities, including health assessments, duty of care, corporate responsibility, risk assessments, international security problems, the Equality Act, special issues concerning air travel, dealing with emergencies abroad and what you need to know about malaria and other tropical diseases. The conference offers a programme of eminent speakers and panelists, including: Professor Peter Chiodini, Consultant Parasitologist at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases, Director of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) Malaria Reference Laboratory and Dean of the Faculty of Travel Medicine; Dr Richard Heron, Vice President Health, BP; Dr Ray Johnston, Occupational Physician with 20 years’ aviation medicine experience and Registrar of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine; Jane Chiodini, Travel Health Specialist Nurse and Secretary of the Faculty of Travel Medicine; and Dr Simon Sheard, Occupational Physician with 20 years’ experience of assessing fitness for work in international contexts, both military and civilian. and also an audience interactive session asking delegates ‘What would you do if…?’, with a panel of health, HR and legal experts to advise. Following successful completion of this course a doctor working in the UK may contact HSE and apply to become an HSE Approved Medical Examiner of Divers (AMED). Once both courses have been completed successfully the medical practitioner is considered competent to perform the assessment of working and recreational divers or hyperbaric chamber workers, to manage diving accidents and to advise diving contractors and others on diving medicine and physiology (with the backup of a hyperbaric expert or consultant). The course assumes some experience in assessing fitness to dive and uses a problem-based approach to encourage revision, discussion and a more critical appreciation of published standards. Each relevant topic area is covered systematically and one or more areas will be selected for special attention in order to broaden experience and / or knowledge.
