Medical student electives

corporate health

Funding for the Faculty of Occupational Medicine’s (FOM) medical student electives is available thanks to the support of Corporate Health and ExxonMobil.

The aim of the awards is to encourage medical students and junior doctors to explore occupational medicine as a specialty and its relevance to practise in all fields of medicine. Fellowship awards can contribute to living and/or travel expenses up to £2,000.

FOM is able to offer introductions to organisations which offer electives both in and outside the UK.   Alternatively, applicants are invited to set up their own elective.

Eligibility criteria for the electives

  • open to UK medical undergraduates and doctors in Foundation Years 1 and 2 only
  • awards will be made in observance of all relevant legislation and without discrimination
  • the project should focus on occupational medicine, though need not do so exclusively

Application process

Applications for Corporate Health Fellowships should be made on this application form, while Applications for ExxonMobil Fellowships should be made on this application form. Both rounds of applications will be assessed by a Panel chaired by the FOM Registrar.

When making an application, you should:

  • define the educational objective(s) of your chosen activity
  • describe how you will apply the educational objectives in your practise
  • have the approval of the relevant Dean and include a supportive statement from the Dean indicating that the activity is compliant with regulations and requirements for registration (licence to practise).

Written report

Successful candidates will be required to submit a report detailing the activity for which they received funding and the extent to which their educational goals were met.  It is helpful to consider the occupational health aspects of your elective when writing your report.

The report will be shared with our membership.

Decisions are usually made within 5-6 weeks; therefore please allow sufficient time before the study experience/visit to submit your application.

Applications should be sent electronically to prizes@fom.ac.uk.
