Article 14/CESR entry to the Specialist Register

(updated 18 May 2010)

Doctors who have not undertaken the traditional training route to specialist registration can apply for specialist registration by means of Article 14 of the General and Specialist Medical Practice (Education, Training and Qualifications) Order 2003. This is also referred to as the Certificate of Eligibility of Specialist Registration (CESR). Doctors submit their applications to the General Medical Council (GMC), which sends them to the relevant College or Faculty for evaluation.

For further information on the application process, and details on the specialty specific guidance drawn up by the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, go to the GMC website.

CESR(CP) entry to the Specialist Register

Doctors who are appointed to GMC and deanery Specialty Training programmes above ST1 level but who have not completed all of their training in posts approved by the GMC for that specialty will not be eligible for a CCT.

However this group of doctors will have completed a “combined programme” of:

a. GMC approved training (that part of their Specialty Training in a GMC approved programme, from their point entry to the programme to successful completion of training)

and

b. Prior training/experience in posts prior to appointment which were not GMC approved posts.

Under these circumstances doctors may apply for a Certificate of Eligibility of Specialist Registration (Combined Route) (CESR(CP)) entry to the Specialist Register.

The overriding factor as to whether a doctor is eligible to apply through the CESR(CP) route is that they MUST have been appointed to a GMC and deanery approved Specialty Training programme. In order to apply for a CESR(CP) in Occupational Medicine the doctor must have successfully completed at least two ARCPs, one of which must be the final ARCP.

Further information on the CESR(CP) application process is on the GMC website.
